Green River Fishing Report

April 5, 2009.

Starting March 1, the river flows were reduced to a steady 800 cfs, down from our Feb. daily release of 1,100 cfs. The flows will remain at 800 cfs until the spring spike in May.

Nymphing is very good now, and the midge hatches have really gotten much heavier. Midges will work in the midday times. We're still seeing some action on glo bugs and San Juan worms. Streamers are getting some action right now, and should continue through the month of April.

Nymphing has been hot with small baetis imitations; WD40s, RS2s, PT and midges. San Juan worms always seem to work well during the higher flows, as do Glow Bugs.

As things start to warm up, expect to see some good dry fly action on calm days with baetis imitations, mostly small para Adams, Griffith's Gnats and Thorax Blue Duns.

FORECAST FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS AHEAD- RATED 6.0

This week's "Hot Six Flies":

The flies mentioned below suggest the available trout food and their imitations. Each week I will list the top six flies that were productive from the week before. The danger here is that things change from week to week, so while trends in fly selection can be consistent, keep in mind they do also change with current fishing conditions.

  • San Juan Worms, Glo Bugs, pale orange, pink, red
  • Tungsten Zebra Midges 16-22 black, red, gray, brown
  • Para Adams 20-24
  • Griffith's Gnat, 22, tie with florescent post for visibility
  • RS2's and WD 40's grey, olive or wine #18-24 as droppers
  • Streamers #2-6 Buggers in tan, black, olive, Goldilox Buggers, Double Bunnies, etc.
