Flaming Gorge Hiking Trails –

The trailhead is the porch.

The best thing about hiking at Flaming Gorge is how little driving it takes. The Blue Diamond Trail circles our private lake and starts a few steps from the cabins. The Canyon Rim Trail picks up nearby and runs along the edge of Red Canyon with the reservoir far below. Beyond that, the lodge sits inside more than 100,000 acres of Ashley National Forest, where elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep and antelope are genuinely common rather than a lucky sighting.

Blue Diamond Trail

Easy, and it starts at the cabins. A gentle path circling East Green’s Lake — flat, shaded and short enough for young kids or a pre-breakfast walk. The light on the water at sunrise is what guests remember.

Red Canyon Rim Trail

Easy to moderate, 4.5 miles one way to the Red Canyon Visitor Center, with reservoir views 1,400 feet above the water for most of its length. Shared with mountain bikers, so keep an ear out. Riding the same trail

Red Canyon Visitor Center

Two miles away. Short paved overlook paths, interpretive exhibits and the single best view of the gorge. A good first stop to get your bearings, and an easy outing on a day when nobody wants a real hike.

Sheep Creek Geologic Loop

Ten miles away, a 13-mile loop through folded and tilted rock along the Uinta Fault. More a drive with short walks than a hike, and bighorn sheep are regulars. Scenic drives

What to bring

More water than you think, sun protection and a layer. We sit high enough that mornings stay cold well into June, and afternoon thunderstorms build fast in July and August. Cell service disappears quickly off the rim, so tell the front desk where you are headed.

Who you might meet

Elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep and antelope live here year round. Osprey fish the reservoir in spring, hummingbirds are so prolific in summer that the forest service comes to track them, Steller’s jays arrive for autumn and wild turkeys walk the property in winter.
