Flaming Gorge in the Fall –
The season we would all pick.
Ask anyone who works here which season they would choose and they will say this one. The aspens turn through the national forest, the summer crowds thin out, the bugs are gone and the trails go quiet. Days stay warm enough to be on the water and nights get cold enough that the fire pit earns its keep. It is also when the wildlife gets easier to find — elk move down into the meadows, Steller’s jays arrive for the season, and the late light on the canyon rim is the best light of the year.
When the colour turns
Fall colour at this elevation generally runs from mid-September into early October, aspens first and the cottonwoods along the drainages following. The peak shifts every year with the weather, so if colour is the whole reason for the trip, call the front desk before you book and we will tell you honestly what it looks like out the window.
Drives worth making
The Sheep Creek Geologic Loop, ten miles away and thirteen miles around, is at its best in autumn. So is the two-mile run up to Red Canyon Overlook and the scenic byway between Manila and Vernal. Scenic drives
Hiking and riding
The Canyon Rim Trail runs 4.5 miles one way along the edge of the canyon and is close to perfect in September — cool, quiet and lined with colour. The Blue Diamond Trail loops our lake for a shorter walk. Hiking trails · Mountain biking
Fishing in the fall
Our private lake is stocked with rainbow, tiger and brook trout and is free for lodge guests, no Utah license required, catch and release with artificial flies and lures. The Green River tailwater below the dam fishes well into autumn. Fishing at Flaming Gorge
Wildlife
Elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep and antelope are all active in the fall, and the hour after dawn and the hour before dark are when to be out looking. Steller’s jays move in for the season and are hard to miss around the property.
Evenings by the fire
Every cabin has an outdoor fire pit with a flip-down grill and a covered porch, and we deliver firewood daily. Bring warm layers — autumn nights here get properly cold, and that is rather the point.
